I train dentists to be much better leaders and much better clinical dentists
It is a given in dentistry that your staff will change many times over the life of your practice through no fault of your own. Life is change and it is not something you can control. Your team is very important in this whole equation and when I consult with dental practices, we also work with the team. Our primary focus is YOU, the doctor, for this simple reason - your team will change over time but you the doctor are the only constant over the life of your practice. I will spend my time coaching you to be a better leader, manager, and clinical dentist. In that way, I know that you will have the stability of a successful practice for the long term because YOU will be a different kind of a dentist - a dentist who now knows how to get the most out of their practice, who can effectively manage people, both patients and staff members, deal with the changes that will happen, and will be an effective and decisive leader. I know you work hard. Unfortunately, hard work alone only leads to stress, burnout, and exhaustion. Successful businesses have strategies in place that make them real winners. You need some proven strategies in all areas of your practice to make it into a total success.
You can't seperate the clinical aspects of your dental practice from the practice management aspects. This is a big mistake that can be very costly to your office every single day that your practice.
Busyness is NOT a measure of success
I meet so many dentists who are in a rut producing only $25-40,000 a month and those that doing well producing $100,000+ a month. What is always interesting to me is that those that produce the less can't get a patient in for 4-6 weeks for a new patient exam or treatment while those that produce the top dollars in dentistry can see a patient the next day. In dentistry, it is not how busy you are, it is how efficient you are that is the measure of success. Clinical and practice management efficiency is the key to producing more with less stress and lower overhead. That is what I teach constantly - I can watch you for 1 hour and immediately find ways to have you do your dentistry faster, easier and better. Any dentist can learn to produce $1000+ an hour with some tweaking of your schedule and your clinical efficiency.
I have been speaking on clinical and practice management topics for years. Chances are you have heard me speak or read my monthly columns in Dental Economics and articles in Dentistry Today and Dentaltown. I have shown dentists that every decision you make clinically has direct practice management ramifications and vice versa. Every technique, dental material, or piece of equipment you purchase directly affects things like overhead control, efficiency, patient satisfaction and retention, and profitability just to name a few items. The opposite is true as well - every practice management decision you make directly affects the clinical outcome of your cases. They go hand in hand - you can't separate them. The synthesis of the clinical and practice management components of your practice is what can finally drive you to the success you have been looking for in dentistry.
Dentistry is a great profession and should be giving you an excellent income. Yet, most dentists I speak to have not attained even close to what their potential really is. We tend to get bogged down with bad habits in terms of time, staff, and patient management and don't take a step back to look at where our practices are going. This is where my consulting and coaching can be the fuel that you need to propel you and your practice to where you want it to be.
Who needs coaching and consulting?
New Dentist Startups - here is what I find so often talking to dentists who have just started their own practices. I must have this discussion every week with a new dentist. A year or two into dental practice, they have made many rookie mistakes such as discounting, poor marketing decisions, patient mismanagement, not getting patients to pay, presenting too much treatment too fast, getting rejected too often, and so many other problems that will become a part of them for their entire dental career. They then speak to other new startups who have the same problems and decide this is the way dentistry is and will be for them. The smart new dentist gets a mentor and a coach so they can avoid these mistakes and get onto the fast track to success! My message to new dentists - you have invested a ton of money into a new office and have consulted with dental reps, manufacturer reps, builders, lawyers and accountants. You then may have some discussions with other dentists who are not too helpful to you or not to happy or successful in their own practices for advice. Do you see now what is wrong? You have no idea how to run a practice, lack dental business and marketing principles, don't know how to hire the right staff and what to pay staff, can't answer the simple questions such as "when is it time to get a hygienist?", and your overhead is 75-80% which you then blame on your lease payments. You need a consultant immediately which will pay for itself instantly in increased production, less overhead, and a lot less stress.
Mid Career Dentists - Read the above because the rookie mistakes that you made in your first years are still with you now 15-20 years later. On top of that, I often ask this question to my dental audiences and am always amazed at the common response. How long did it take you to do a simple crown prep when you first started practice - about 1 - 1 1/2 hours? You have now been doing this for 15 years and how long does it take you now to do a simple crown prep - most dentists will tell me it still takes them 1 - 1 1/2 hours. Have we not learned how to be more efficient in 15 years of dental practice? Unfortunately, most dentists are still too inefficient. I can show you how to do that same crown prep start to finish in 30-40 mnutes. What do you think that will do to your production and overhead? Inefficiency is a practice killer and we can make you more efficient immediately with some simple techniques. Couple that with training your staff, showing you how to get greater case acceptance, and all the other things below.
Near Retirement Dentists - read all the above and let us show you how to significantly beef up your production and lower your overhead to make your practice much more enticing to a prospective buyer. You have been in practice for many years and this should be a lot of fun for you at this point in time. The office should be much more of a hobby for you, enjoyable to be in, and easy for you to deal with. I have taught some of these techniques to dentists ready to retire and then they decide to stay in dentistry because they are having too much fun!
