Happy New Year! I hope that you had a great holiday season and that we are all re-energized to get back to work and provide the best CE possible to dentists!
Congratulations to the Academy of General Dentistry Annual Meeting, Greater New York Dental Meeting, the Florida Dental Association Meeting, and the 2012 Chicago Midwinter meeting for being among the first to offer live patient hands-on workshops in Botox and dermal fillers. I have been giving these programs for the last couple of years and we have received so many inquiries that I thought it best to talk about it again in this monthly newsletter so that you, our dental meeting planners, can best fit this into your upcoming regional or annual sessions.
Just as a very quick introduction, Botox has been around therapeutically in dentistry for almost 20 years. Botox is a form of Botulinum Toxin and when injected into muscle it will begin to relax the muscle fibers so that they contract less or don’t contract at all, depending upon how much is given. For dentistry, this is a wonderful adjunctive therapy for TMJ, bruxism, orthodontics, dentures and a myriad of treatment options when we need to retrain or control muscle movement. Botox is also used cosmetically because as the muscles move underneath the skin, that action cause wrinkles. If you eliminate the movement, the wrinkles go away.
Dermal fillers are basically a volumizer. People lose collagen and fat as we all age and that causes the folds and wrinkles around in the oral and maxillofacial regions. Our lips thin over time. Dermal fillers are a synthetic replacement for the collagen.
Both of these treatments are temporary that will last anywhere from three to six months, which makes them very safe and affordable for most patients. Botox and dermal fillers are two of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the world.
Now over 30 states allow dentists to perform Botox and dermal fillers for cosmetic and therapeutic reasons while most of the other states allow these materials for dental therapeutic uses such as TMJ syndrome, bruxism, and many other therapies. Many of you are familiar with my “Hottest Topics in Dentistry” lecture that is still the mainstay lecture that I give on a regular basis. I can certainly tell you that one of the hottest topics in dentistry right now is the area of Botox and dermal fillers and integrating it into a dental practice.
I am president of the The American Academy of Facial Esthetics (AAFE) www.facialesthetics.org. This organization presents two-day, live patient hands-on courses on the topics of Botox and dermal fillers for every dental practice. We are happy to work with your organization as we are providing these workshops at annual meetings around the country. Generally, the host organization will provide the marketing , the The American Academy of Facial Esthetics will then provide the administrative duties necessary to run the course. Every dentist must show proof of malpractice insurance and their dental license. The AAFE also sends personnel to the course to administer the on-site course to make sure that it goes smoothly. We can accommodate up to 50 attendees at each course and the AAFE will send the appropriate amount of trainers who are dentists, physicians, nurses, or physicians’ assistants to lecture and to oversee the hands-on portion of the course. We have an outstanding faculty who you can see at our website.
We recommend that each attendee bring a model patient – otherwise it is highly likely that they will find a model patient at the course, but we do not guarantee this. In giving this course nearly 50 times over the last year, we have been able to nearly accommodate every single attendee even if they have not brought a model patient.
The first day of the course is lecture and hands-on teaching Botox therapy and the second day of the course is dedicated solely to dermal filler therapy.
The American Academy of Facial Esthetics has a very equitable fee sharing arrangement with the host organizations and I would be happy to discuss this with you at your convenience to make these workshops a real success at one of your regional or annual meetings. Please feel free to contact me at 216-570-8770 or my email address drlouis@facialesthetics.org.
Of course, I am also always available to give my most popular course, "The Hottest Topics in Dentistry" and you can get information on all of the courses I present at on our Meeting Planners page. We cover many of the hottest topics in dentistry including the newest advances in one hour teeth whitening, narrow diameter implants, laser dentistry, Botox and dermal fillers for therapeutic and esthetic uses in dental practice, no prep porcelain veneers, resin bonding, overhead control, treatment acceptance, and patient financing into their practices.
Please let me know how I can help you in the new year! I look forward to working with you.
